 AMPHORAE, CAVES and CORALS in the vicinity of CAVTAT !

Sea divers are especially interested in amphorae sites. In the vicinity of Cavtat at a depth of 25 to 32 meters, there exists a submarine museum containing 1,600 amphorae, unique in the world! It was there that an ancient ship sank in the 4th century B.C. The amphoras lie in the muddy depths, arranged in layers, just as they were shipped. The remainder of the ship is invisible; however, the greater part of the amphorae, which contained oil and wine were destined for Venice, is well preserved.
At a depth of 30 meters, there are also vessels-enormous ceramic containers that in ancient times were built into the ships. They date from the 1st century B.C., constituting one of the rare vessels sites in the Mediterranean.
